BE FREE and International Group Exhibition

CURATORIAL TEXT by Juliana Naufel

“Is freedom anything else than the right to live as we wish? Nothing else." Epictetus

What is the “freedom” we are told about, think about and experience? What does it consist of? What uses do we put it to or not put it to? The meaning of being free has continued to evolve and change, and it varies depending on each person’s upbringing, life experiences and the reality that they are part of. One thing is sure: freedom comes with choices and endless possibilities, and  through reclaiming to be free in a society that is always finding ways of constraining us, we actively empower ourselves and reinforce our sense of agency within the greater community by showing others that there is always a way to make aligned choices led by our hearts and that it is already safe to be unapologetically ourselves while navigating through life.

Be Free features forty-two artworks by twenty-two women artists who are exploring aspects of freedom through their creations. Art is one of the most powerful ways of expression and getting to know oneself while co-creating a new reality. As in anything else in life, freedom starts from within, and there’s no better way than experiencing art to reflect on it.  Whether the presented works are referencing being free in a more explicit way, or highlighting what freedom can look like in a subtle way, each artist brings their distinctive perspective to the exhibition through unexpected visuals and contemporary techniques through figurative and abstract works. Collectively, the exhibition offers a partial glimpse of the endless lenses that we have of what being free can mean to each of us. These creative gestures are at once expressions of pain and resiliency, resistance, celebration, joy and love and embracing the idea that freedom starts from within.
